William Roper is the CEO of cargo drone manufacturing company Volansi. Roper, a three-time Wash100 winner, is former assistant secretary for acquisition, technology and logistics at the U.S. Air Force. As Air Force’s acquisition chief, he spearheaded technology transformations for software development, digital engineering and AI and helped link tech companies to the Department of Defense through initiatives like AFWERX.
Kathleen Hicks is the Department of Defense’s deputy secretary. She was confirmed by the Senate in February 2021, making her the first woman to assume the second-highest ranking civilian job at the Pentagon. Prior to her current role, Hicks, a two-time Wash100 Award winner, was with the Center for Strategic and International Studies as head of the International Security Program.
Alejandro Mayorkas is secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. He received Senate confirmation in February 2021, making him the first Latino and first immigrant to take the helm of DHS. Lloyd Austin is secretary of the Department of Defense. He was confirmed by the Senate in January 2021, making him the first African American to lead the Pentagon. Austin, a retired U.S. Army general, culminated his 41-year military career as commander of U.S. Central Command. He retired from military service in 2016 and served on the boards of Raytheon Technologies, Tenet Healthcare and Nucor. Austin is a two-time Wash100 awardee.
Teresa Carlson is president and chief growth officer at Splunk and non-executive chair of special purpose acquisition company KnightSwan. Prior to Splunk, she worked at Amazon Web Services as vice president of worldwide public sector, a division she founded in 2010 to help government customers meet their missions. Carlson, a six-time Wash100 awardee, was recognized by Executive Mosaic in 2020 for driving cloud innovation and advocating for cloud computing education.
Derek Tournear is the director of the Space Development Agency and oversees the development of a layered space architecture to provide U.S. warfighters and allies with reliable and resilient space capabilities. His industry career included time as head of research and development for Harris' space and development segment. Tournear, a 2021 Wash100 Award recipient, held program management roles at IARPA and DARPA prior to joining industry.
Mark Esper served as the 27th defense secretary from July 2019 to November 2020. He spent nearly seven years at Raytheon Company as vice president of government relations prior to his nomination and confirmation to the Army secretary role in 2017.
