The State Department has approved Taiwan’s two foreign military sales requests worth approximately $2 billion combined for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems, AN/TPS-77 and AN/TPS-78 radar turnkey systems, related equipment and services.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Friday it has already notified Congress of the proposed FMS deals.
NASAMS Deal
RTX subsidiary Raytheon will serve as the principal contractor in the proposed $1.2 billion deal to procure three NASAMS medium-range air defense platforms, fire distribution centers, canister launcher systems, electro-optical/infrared systems and MIDS Link 16-capable radios.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S., or TECRO, also requested to purchase AMRAAM and AMRAAM-ER captive air training missiles, AIM-120ER load trainers, spare parts, classified software, technical support, engineering and logistics services.
The NASAMS agreement will enable Taiwan to improve its capability in defending its airspace, providing regional security and strengthening its interoperability with the U.S.
The proposed sale will require the deployment of about 26 U.S. government and 34 contractor representatives to the East Asian country for an extended period to support equipment deprocessing and fielding, training and system checkout and provide logistics and technical assistance.
AN/TPS-77 & AN/TPS-78 Radar Turnkey Systems
The proposed $828 million sale of the ground-based radars will enable Taiwan to support its medium to long range air surveillance operations to counter current and future threats and maintain its defense capability.
Under this FMS request, TECRO also requested to buy spare and repair parts, transportation support, personnel training and training equipment, program support, technical, U.S. government and contractor engineering and logistics services.
According to DSCA, the U.S. Air Force will procure the radars.
