Dr. Tom Karako’s Impact on GovCon

Dr. Karako’s national security influence extends significantly into the government contracting (GovCon) sector. His research and recommendations on missile defense have significantly impacted procurement and development strategies within the industry.

In a recent interview with Defense News, Karako discussed the improvement in missile defense and emphasized the importance of adapting to new technologies. He highlighted the strategic need for advanced missile defense systems to counteract global threats.

He also shared some of his colleague Ian Williams’s reports about “Putin’s Missile War”, despite the Ukrainians’ limited air defense.

“It is far from an integrated air missile defense as we would like. It still has a pretty good impact, and it’s been able to impede the successful suppression or the successful targeting on the part of the Russians. So the Russians have not been able to get anything like air superiority.” Karaoke said.

Moreover, Karako’s recent op-ed on Breaking Defense examined the U.S. Army’s use of the Iron Dome System. He argued that while it is adequate for Israel’s defense needs, it does not align with the Army’s integrated air and missile defense strategy due to interoperability and cybersecurity concerns.

Instead, he advocates reallocating resources toward more suitable systems like the indirect fire protection capability (IFPC) to match the Army’s specific limitations and strategic needs. The IFPC offers kinetic and non-kinetic solutions, including interceptors like the AIM-9X and the Skyhunter, a variant of the Iron Dome’s Tamir Missile, and advanced technologies like lasers and high-powered microwaves.
