The State Department has approved the government of Kuwait’s request to purchase maintenance, repair and sustainment services and military equipment for an estimated cost of $300 million.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Tuesday BAE Systems, U.S. Ordnance, DRS Technologies, L3Harris Technologies, Northrop Grumman and RTX will serve as the principal contractors of the possible foreign military sale.
Kuwait Plans to Refurbish Maintenance Facilities
According to DCSA, the purchase will include common and special tools, materiel handling equipment, repair parts, bench stock, hydraulics, fuel oil pumps and other materials. Kuwait also needs facility operation and maintenance, functionality testing, the capability to repair AGT1500 engines in line with the Total Integrated Engine Revitalization program process.
The possible FMS is aimed at enabling the Kuwait Land Forces to improve operational readiness through the repair and maintenance of its M1A2 and M1A2K Abrams main battle tanks, M88A1 and M88A2 Hercules recovery vehicles, M577A2 and M577A3 command post carriers, and M113A1, M113A2, and M113A3 armored personnel carriers.
Kuwait is a major non-NATO ally of the United States. DCSA said the transaction will not have an impact on U.S. defense readiness or significantly alter the basic military balance in the Middle East.
US Approves FMS
The State Department also recently cleared Taiwan’s planned purchase of extended support services for its tactical communications network. The deal is estimated to be worth $65 million, with General Dynamics Mission Systems as the primary contractor.
