Zach Furness returned to MITRE to assume the role of chief information security officer, the executive announced via LinkedIn post Friday.
Most recently, Furness served as deputy CISO and director of cyber risk management at Children’s National Hospital. He joined the pediatric hospital in December 2020 as director of cybersecurity governance and risk management.
The executive also previously worked as director of IT security at Inova Health System, where he had primary oversight of identity and access management, risk and compliance, system security engineering and program management within information security.
Zach Furness’ MITRE Career
Furness was with MITRE for nearly three decades before leaving the not-for-profit corporation in December 2018.
His career there includes time as a member of technical staff, department head for modeling and simulation, division chief engineer for global operations and intelligence programs and technical director for National Cybersecurity FFRDC.
In his most recent MITRE post, Furness oversaw the organization’s support to the development of NIST 1800 Special Publications on practical cybersecurity guidance for industry, including healthcare, energy, finance, retail and transportation.
