BWXT Lands $116.5M NNSA Contract for HALEU Feedstock Production

The National Nuclear Security Administration has awarded a BWX Technologies (NYSE: BWXT) business a potential $116.5 million contract to produce more than two metric tons of high assay low enriched uranium or HALEU feedstock for advanced reactors over the next five years.

BWXT Nuclear Operations Group will generate the HALEU feedstock by processing thousands of kilograms of NNSA-provided scrap material containing enriched uranium under the contract, which has an initial value of approximately $47 million, the company said Wednesday.

“The project will clear over two metric tons of scrap material from the Y-12 National Security Complex, contributing to ongoing efforts to reduce the material accountability and inventory totals at the site, while also supporting the Department’s advanced reactor demonstration projects,” said Jeff Chamberlin, assistant deputy administrator at NNSA’s office of material management and minimization.

The company will carry out the project at its facilities near Lynchburg, Virginia, and plans to hire about 20 new operators, safety personnel and engineers to support work on the contract.
