The U.S. Navy has disclosed that Boeing (NYSE: BA), Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) are pursuing the airframe development contract for the next-generation fighter jet program, dubbed F/A-XX, Aviation Week reported Sunday.
Pratt & Whitney and GE Aerospace are competing to build the engine for the service branch’s F/A-XX program, which has transitioned from concept refinement to the design maturation phase.
Cmdr. Mark Cochran, F/A-XX requirements officer at the Navy’s Air Warfare Division N98, said during a panel discussion at a symposium that the service is focusing more on operational reach for the new fighter program aimed at countering threats at long distances.
Tom Jones, president of Northrop’s aeronautic systems, told the publication in a statement that the company is competing for development work on the F/A-XX program.
