HII‘s (NYSE: HII) Newport News Shipbuilding division has booked contract modifications worth $393.3 million from the U.S. Navy to implement a new ship delivery strategy for the second Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier.
The branch now expects to receive the USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) on July 31, 2025, the company said Friday.
“This strategy will decrease post-delivery work required and increase ship capability and readiness at delivery,” said Lucas Hicks, vice president for the JFK new construction aircraft carrier program at NNS.
Under the amended contract, tasks that were initially part of the post-shakedown availability phase will be included in the baseline construction process. In 2020, the branch made similar changes to the delivery approach and moved the shipment deadline to June 30, 2024.
Ford-class carriers feature a modern flight deck, weapons handling systems and a new nuclear power plant.
