Spire Global (NYSE: SPIR) has deployed and established contact with two nanosatellites that employ optical inter-satellite links to establish secure communications with each other and reduce network latency.
The 6U satellites launched into orbit aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Transporter-8 rideshare mission in support of the European Space Agency’s Advanced Research in Telecommunications Services Pioneer Program, Spire said Tuesday.
Both cubesats have terminals that seek to improve link speed, data latency and system resiliency to interference.
Spire designed its OCTs for small satellites to communicate via an optical link at a distance of up to 5,000 kilometers.
The Transporter-8 mission also launched Spire’s FOREST-2 satellite with a thermal-infrared optical payload and data processing unit for OroraTech.
