Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) and GlobalFoundries (Nasdaq: GFS) have partnered with the intent to advance chip technological innovation and strengthen the resiliency and security of U.S. semiconductor supply chains for mission-critical security systems.
GF and Lockheed will identify critical needs in secure chip manufacturing and innovation across several areas, including gallium nitride on silicon to help semiconductors work at higher temperatures, silicon photonics for high-speed and low-power data transport and 3D heterogeneous integration for optimized chip packaging, the companies said in a joint statement released Monday.
The companies will build a chiplet ecosystem to facilitate rapid chip production and improve anti-fragility in microelectronic supply chains and systems using GF’s technology and manufacturing practices through the collaborative effort, which supports the objectives of the CHIPS and Science Act.
Both parties will also work with the U.S. government, advance tech development and explore external funding opportunities.
Jim Taiclet, chairman, president and CEO of Lockheed, said the company is focused on delivering security capabilities aimed at advancing deterrence and helping clients get ahead of emerging threats.
“We look forward to working with GlobalFoundries to help increase access to domestically produced microelectronics – a true national security imperative,” added the two-time Wash100 honoree.
GF President and CEO Thomas Caulfield and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer joined Taiclet during Monday’s announcement of the collaboration at GF’s manufacturing facility in upstate New York.
