A Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX) subsidiary has secured a two-year, $182 million contract from the U.S. Army to provide a ground-based air defense system to Ukraine as part of a military aid package.
The Department of Defense obligated the full amount to procure National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems using fiscal 2022 Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative funds, according to a DOD award notice published Friday.
NASAMS comprises a Sentinel radar and an updated medium-range air-to-air missile technology from Raytheon and a battle management station, called the Fire Distribution Center, from Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
The system is designed to engage and destroy sophisticated air threats from adversarial aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles and cruise missiles.
“Ukraine will join a dozen nations around the globe who rely on NASAMS to defeat a multitude of threats, including cruise missiles, aircraft, and unmanned systems,â said Thomas Laliberty, president of land warfare and air defense at Raytheon Missiles and Defense.
