Robert Carey, president of Cloudera Government Solutions, said he believes government agencies have made progress in using data as a strategic asset and connecting data securely to speed up decision-making processes and accelerate missions since they now have the tools that allow them to manage and command and control data.
Federal agencies “are all having main efforts to understand, categorize, align, organize and use data as a strategic asset to help foster their mission,” Carey told FedScoop in an interview published Thursday.
He also shared his insights how agencies are leveraging data to power artificial intelligence and machine learning functions and why agencies are adopting a hybrid cloud model for their information technology enterprise.
Carey, a previous Wash100 Award winner, said he thinks agencies are in a hybrid model “as a matter of fact, as a matter of course.” He discussed how the model allows agencies to use and easily access data to support mission-speed decision making.
When asked about how to secure data in the cloud and other environments, Carey said the first thing agencies need to do is understanding their data lifecycle.
“The most important feature here is that you are understanding your data is not inside the traditional edges of the network, it is now the modern edges of the network where your data lies. So your security apparatus has to be managed from a single pane of glass like we can do to the edge wherever that edge may be so that we can ensure you are looking at data you’re allowed to see, I’m looking at data I’m allowed to see and if I’m not allowed to see it, I don’t get access to it,” he stated.
“What does it take to make sure that everything is in fact secure as you stare at it? It takes this underlayment of security that is part of your data lifecycle as you now reach into these different and disparate locations,” Carey added.
