Leonardo has secured a contract to manufacture a pair of AW139 helicopters for the National Nuclear Security Administration‘s search and research and topographic surveying operations.
The company said Tuesday the two aircraft units for NNSA will have an integrated avionics system that includes sensors and communications tools.
NNSA uses sensor-equipped helicopters to monitor high-profile events and support the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster relief operations.
The agency responsible for overseeing U.S. nuclear stockpile conducts its aircraft operations from Andrew Air Force Base in Maryland and Henderson Airport in Nevada.
More than 30 percent of AW139s worldwide were built at Leonardo’s factory in Philadelphia.
