Kathleen Hicks: DOD’s Climate Change Objectives Align With Department Mission

Kathleen Hicks, deputy secretary of the Department of Defense and a 2021 Wash100 Award winner, said that DOD created an adaptation plan and a risk analysis document to comply with the White House’s executive order for all agencies to take action on climate change, DOD News reported Tuesday.

“These reports will help guide the department as we adapt to climate,” Hicks said Tuesday during an event in Detroit. “But the science is clear. As a nation, and a department, we must do our part to mitigate climate change itself.”

She noted that climate change poses a challenge to national security and innovations in the automotive industry could help address the climate crisis.

Hicks said the department is working on a sustainability plan to help chart the course for increasing energy and water efficiency, improving sustainable procurement and supply chains and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“Additionally, part of the sustainability plan will be focused on developing a zero-emissions, non-tactical vehicle fleet. We also know that we need to optimize energy use in our tactical vehicles,” the deputy defense secretary added.

Climate resilience will be the focal point for a Nov. 18 fireside chat hosted by Executive Mosaic’s flagship Government Contracting Wire. Visit GovCon Wire to learn more about this upcoming event.
