Lauren Knausenberger, chief information officer for the Department of the Air Force, was presented her first Wash100 Award by Executive Mosaic CEO Jim Garrettson during a recent 4×24 membership dinner.
This marks the first time that Knausenberger has received the most prestigious and celebrated award in all of government contracting (GovCon). In the record-shattering 2021 Wash100 Popular Vote earlier this year, Knausenberger finished in second place behind an overwhelming show of support and participation from the GovCon community.
“Federal service is hard and it takes a lot of luck and perseverance to get things done,” Knausenberger explained at the time. “It’s incredibly rewarding, nothing else comes close. Let’s keep all of these warfighters and civil servants fueled with knowledge of their amazing impact!”
Executive Mosaic recognized Knausenberger with her first Wash100 Award for her leadership and drive for innovation to advance information technology and modernization efforts for the Air Force as well as the complete digital transformation of the service branch’s technical capabilities.

During an interview with Fedscoop in June, Knausenberger discussed the concept of attacking manual processes and advancing automation within a number of the Air Force’s legacy systems to save time and money while also driving qualified parties to focus on higher-value work.
“We’re at the point where we’ve shown that we can do [automation] very effectively and where we have a lot of our new projects naturally leaning toward more automated processes,” Knausenberger said. “And you get more automated processes organically, of course, by adopting cloud environments with built-in services that help take away a lot of the manual work of maintaining an environment the way we’ve done in legacy infrastructure.”
