GSA Seeks Contractor for Education Department HQ Renovation Project

The General Services Administration has started its bidding process for a project to renovate the Department of Education headquarters in Washington, D.C., as the latter agency seeks to consolidate operations and house 600 additional personnel currently working from leased spaces in other two locations within the capital, Washington Business Journal reported Monday.

Four floors of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Federal Building will be converted into open areas to accommodate three of the department’s major offices, according to a GSA solicitation for the renovation project. The agency expects the building’s capacity to increase by 35 percent, specifically from 949 to 1,281 seats.

A DoEd spokesperson told the publication that the project aligns with the department’s facility modernization and footprint reduction goals.

The effort will also include electrical system changes and modernization of HVAC, power distribution, alarm and sprinkle systems.

GSA estimates the 208,000-square-foot renovation project covering floors three, four, six and seven to cost between $50 million to $60 million.

The LBJ building was established in 1961 and underwent a one-floor renovation worth $32.5 million in 2018 to add new workstations and evaluate the facility’s openness to larger renovations.
