The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Linux Foundation have signed an agreement to establish an umbrella organization to help the U.S. government advance use of open source software and accelerate innovation in the areas of 5G, artificial intelligence, edge, internet of things and other technologies.
The US Government Open Programmable Secure organization will launch the Open Programmable Secure-5G as its inaugural project to develop open source software and related systems to secure end-to-end 5G stack and come up with new capabilities to mitigate botnet of things, adaptive adversaries and other cyber threats, the Linux Foundation said Wednesday.
“DARPA’s use of open source software in the Open Programmable Secure 5G (OPS-5G) program leverages transparency, portability and open access inherent in this distribution model,” said Jonathan Smith, information innovation office program manager at DARPA.
“Transparency enables advanced software tools and systems to be applied to the code base, while portability and open access will result in decoupling hardware and software ecosystems, enabling innovations by more entities across more technology areas.”
US GOV OPS will also collaborate with LF Edge, Zephyr, LF Networking and other downstream and upstream communities to provide the U.S. government access to a secure code base.
