Potomac Officers Club’s “5G Space: The Ultimate Connected High Ground” Panel will host Jim Brinker, of Intel Federal and 2020 Wash100 awardee, Jeff Reed of Virginia Tech, Jay Yass of Omnispace and Jennifer Warren of Lockheed Martin. The panel will be moderated by Maria Demaree, vice president and general manager of Mission Solutions with Lockheed Martin.
Jim Brinker, President and General Manager of Intel Federal
Jim Brinker, president and general manager of Intel Federal and 2020 Wash100 Award recipient, has a deep level of government experience. Prior to coming into Intel Federal, he was responsible for driving worldwide Exascale relationships, within the Extreme Compute Organization.
He also served as the senior director of Worldwide Sales for the Direct Systems Sales organization in SMG. Prior to joining Intel, Brinker spent more than a decade at Silicon Graphics International. Brinker previously served as president of SGI Federal LLC. He has also held strategic positions at AT&T, Sony and Cisco.
Brinker recently discussed how 5G network technology could help the government better respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and other public health emergencies.
“The main benefit of 5G, especially for public sector applications, is the enablement of machine-to-machine communications,” Brinker wrote. “5G also enables massive machine type computations, which lead to the low-latency computing required of real-time applications.”
He said 5G could be integrated with sensors to monitor people’s health and generate digital profiles, which could help first responders and health care professionals improve contact tracing efforts and identify infection hotspots.
“The key will be finding the balance between the need to employ technologies like 5G to enhance health contact tracing capability and the need to protect individual data and privacy,” Brinker added.
Jeff Reed, Willis G. Worcester Professor & Founding Director of Wireless@ Virginia Tech
In 2009, Reed served as the founding faculty member and interim director of the Hume Center for National Security and Technology. From 2019 to 2020, he served as the interim director for the State of Virginia’s Commonwealth Cyber Initiative.
Reed’s area of expertise is in software radios, smart antennas, wireless networks, and communications signal processing. He has authored, co-authored, or co-edited eleven books and proceedings, contributed to six books, and authored or co-authored over three hundred journal and conference papers.
Virginia Tech recently announced that it will expand its research bandwidth. The Virginia Tech Foundation bought eight blocks of Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) in the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) auction.
As owner of priority access licenses (PALs) for four 10MHz blocks in Montgomery County and four blocks in Craig County, the university will likely use the spectrum to create a private 4G/LTE network and, later, a private 5G/LTE network for use on campus.
Reed noted that he is excited about the research possibilities of a new broadband bandwidth block purchased by the university.
