Gulf Island Shipyard Awarded $130M to Build Additional Navy Towing, Salvage & Rescue Ships

Jeff Brody

Gulf Island Fabrication‘s shipyard business has received a two-year, $129.9M contract modification to build two towing, salvage and rescue vessels for the U.S. Navy.

The shipbuilding project will take place in Houma, La., and contract work also involves T-ATS 6 unique item identification, the Department of Defense said Wednesday.

DoD expects the project to be finished by October 2022.

Gulf Island Shipyards initially won a $522.7M contract in March 2018 to design and construct up to eight T-ATS vessels based on commercial towing offshore models.

The shipbuilder laid the keel on USNS Navajo, the lead ship of its class, during a ceremony held in late October 2019 at the Houma Terrebonne Civic Center.
