A corporate vice president of Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has said the company will offer security updates to federally authorized voting systems that still use Windows 7, even after the decade-old operating system reaches its end of life phase in January 2020.
Tom Burt, CVP of customer security and trust at Microsoft, wrote in a blog post published Friday the company will update the Windows 7 security feature through the November 2020 election as part of its Defending Democracy Program.
The goal of the program is to secure information technology systems that support political campaigns, other election actvities and nonprofit groups that promote democracy.
Microsoft plans to continue to update election-related computers within the U.S. and other democratic nations through the end of next year.
The company has urged them to update business devices to Windows 10 and will also provide technical assistance to help election authorities apply security features of the Azure cloud computing platform.
