Caitlin Kalinowski, head of virtual reality hardware at Facebook (Nasdaq: FB), has joined the board of directors at public safety technology provider Axon (Nasdaq: AAXN).

Her appointment brings the number of independent directors at Axon to seven, the company said Wednesday.

Since joining Facebook in 2013, the more than 14-year industry veteran has led a team that designs and engineers technology products including the Oculus line of commercial VR headsets and Facebook Bluetooth Beacons.

She previously spent more than five years at Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), where she led the technical development of the MacBook Air line of laptops. Earlier in her career, she worked as a product design engineer for San Francisco-based computer hardware firm OQO.

Rick Smith, founder and CEO of Axon, said Kalinowski™s appointment will support the company™s efforts to deploy VR technology for public safety projects such as empathy-based training.

Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Axon develops law enforcement technology platforms for federal civilian and military use.
