Gen. Mark Milley
The Senate voted 89-1 Thursday to confirm Gen. Mark Milley, chief of staff at the U.S. Army and a 2019 Wash100 Award winner, as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Reuters reported Friday. He will succeed U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, a previous Wash100 Award winner, on Oct. 1.
Milley assumed his current post at the Army in 2015. He previously served as commander of Army Forces Command, commanding general of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command and deputy commanding general of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan.
His confirmation came seven months after President Trump announced his intent to nominate him as head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and days after the Senate confirmed 2019 Wash100 recipient Mark Esper as the secretary for the Department of Defense.
