On June 27, 2018, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, then deputy secretary, announced the establishment of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center to accelerate the delivery of AI-based capabilities. Dana Deasy, DoD chief information officer, was tasked with leading JAIC, which will advance collaboration within DoD, across government, and with industry, academia, and U.S. allies to strengthen partnerships, highlight critical needs, solve problems of urgent operational significance, and adapt AI technologies for DoD missions.
