Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has secured a $179 million contract modification from the U.S. Air Force to provide hardware and support for large aircraft infrared countermeasures systems, or LAIRCM.
The Defense Department said Thursday the company will perform work under the modification in Rolling Meadows, Illinois through April 30, 2019.
LAIRCM is designed to increase the capacity of DoD aircraft to counter infrared man-portable air-defense systems or missile threats.
The system features an ultra-violet missile warning sensor, a laser transmitter assembly, control interface unit and processors designed to detect, track, jam and counter IR missiles.
The modification includes purchases worth a total of $157,091 from Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia and NATO under the foreign military sales program.
The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center will obligate $14.8 million at the time of the award from fiscal 2015, 2016 and 2017 procurement; operations and maintenance; research, development, test, and evaluation; National Guard; and overseas contingency operations funds.
