Michael Strianese: L3 Eyes Tactical UUV Market With OceanServer Buy

L3 Technologies (NYSE: LLL) has bought autonomous unmanned undersea vehicle manufacturer OceanServer Technology for an undisclosed sum, a move that Chairman and CEO Michael Strianese said marks L3’s expansion push into the UUV market.

Fall River, Massachusetts-based OceanServer builds lightweight UUVs for military, commercial and international clients, L3 said Tuesday.

The business was renamed L3 OceanServer and integrated into the defense contractor’s  sensor systems segment.

Strianese noted the acquisition also provides the New York City-based company with a platform “to support the U.S. Navy™s vision for the tactical employment of UUVs.”

OceanServer’s autonomous underwater vehicle Iver is designed to aid sensor development, general surveying, research, subsurface security and environmental monitoring missions.

L3 said the system will complement its portfolio of sensor, communications, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare and mine countermeasures technology offerings.
