Huntington Ingalls to Build 9th US National Security Cutter Under $486M Contract

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) has secured a $486 million contract to build a ninth National Security Cutter for the U.S. Coast Guard.

The company said Friday that Legend-class NSCs are the flagships of the Coast Guard’s cutter fleet and will replace 12 current Hamilton-class cutters.

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has provided six NSCs to the service branch and is scheduled to deliver two more Legend-class ships dubbed Kimball and Midgett in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

NSCs work to support maritime homeland security, law enforcement and national security missions.

The 418-foot-long cutters are designed to operate at a speed of up to 28 knots, displace nearly 4, 500 tons of cargo and carry as many as 120 personnel for up to 60 days.
