Lockheed Awarded $245M Navy Contract Extension for MK-48 Torpedo System

Lockheed Martin has secured a $245 million contract extension from the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command to continue the delivery of essential systems for the Mark-48 Guidance and Control, or G&C, Mod 7 program

The defense company said Tuesday the contract covers the production of MK-48 torpedo guidance and control sections for the U.S. Navy, the Royal Australian Navy and the foreign military sales customers. Lockheed delivered the 100th G&C section early this year, fulfilling a key deliverable. The contract will run until September 2027.

MK-48 Guidance and Control Program

The MK-48 Guidance and Control program is a vital component of the Navy’s submarine fleet. These G&C sections provide advanced systems for the MK-48 torpedo that boost the number of MK-48 Mod 7 heavyweight torpedoes in the Navy’s and allied forces’ inventory. The program enables the Navy to strengthen its maritime capabilities.

“This contract extension for the MK-48 Guidance and Control program is a testament to Lockheed Martin’s ability to aggressively revitalize a once-dormant technology, delivering more guidance and control sections at a faster production rate,” said Tom Warner, vice president of undersea warfare at Lockheed Martin’s rotary and mission systems business.

In 2022, the Navy awarded Lockheed Martin RMS a $302.2 million contract for the procurement of MK-48 heavyweight submarine-launched torpedoes.
