Lee Ann Crochunis is not a fair-weather healthcare advocate — she’s spent her whole career fighting to give Americans healthcare access and to improve the processes and technology around that delivery. She has logged over 20 total years with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and was named deputy director of its Office of Information Technology in March.
Crochunis has a particular expertise in Medicare and is eager to share with the industrial base what CMS OIT needs at the Potomac Officers Club’s 2024 Healthcare Summit. At the event, scheduled for Dec. 11 at the Falls Church Marriott Fairview Park in Virginia, Crochunis will be the closing keynote speaker. If you’re a contractor who already is or wants to do business with CMS or the Department of Health and Human Services generally, you won’t want to miss this key networking opportunity.
Who Is Lee Ann Crochunis?
CMS: Round 1
Crochunis started at CMS as a data analyst and eventually became a division director in charge of mapping out and structuring the recruitment of Medicare administrative contractors, a.k.a. MACs, as well as managing contract execution and IT security adherence of the MACs. She laid the foundation of her acquisition world knowledge in this role.
Private Sector
The executive gave 15 years to CMS in her first stint with the agency, before pivoting to the private sector in 2008. In a decade on the other side of the GovCon equation, Crochunis led projects for CMS and Office of the National Coordinator contracts, in addition to serving as chief growth officer for healthcare IT company Neil Hoosier & Associates.
CMS: Round 2
Upon returning to CMS in 2018, Crochunis has held a series of positions of increasing responsibility, among them, deputy director of the division of shared systems management and director of the applications management group. Her contributions to the agency are invaluable and she is one of their foremost experts on healthcare IT and acquisition.
What’s New With CMS?
CMS officials like Crochunis work tirelessly to keep the many healthcare needs of U.S. citizens in mind while developing new tools, support plans and resources. Below are some of the latest things CMS has been working on:
- In September, CMS posted a request for information about uses for artificial intelligence in the agency, both to increase operational efficiency and to inspire a belief in AI effectiveness. Capability statements are due by Oct. 7.
- In August, RELI Group landed a decade-long, $33 million contract from CMS, under which the company will oversee and audit the Making Care Primary Model, a primary care-focused initiative.
- In July, HHS began accepting public feedback regarding a new rule: the Health Data, Technology, and Interoperability: Patient Engagement, Information Sharing and Public Health Interoperability, or HTI-2. The rule suggests two certification criteria that would potentially boost data exchange, public health response and healthcare delivery.
- Also in July, LMI won a $55 million contract from CMS to assist with the creation and establishment of the Medicare Shared Savings program.
