Fermi Forward Discovery Group Wins $5B DOE Contract for Fermilab Management, Operation

The Department of Energy has awarded Fermi Forward Discovery Group a potential $5 billion contract to manage and operate an Illinois-based national laboratory that advances research and develops technologies in the field of high energy particle physics.

DOE announced the award of the management and operation contract for the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, in a notice published Monday on SAM.gov.

FNAL, also known as Fermilab, is a single-purpose lab that oversees the construction and operation of accelerator and detector facilities and the development of technologies used in particle physics research.

Fermi Research Alliance currently oversees the national lab for DOE’s Office of Science.

DOE anticipates the contractor to assume full responsibility for FNAL’s operations by January 2025.

In January, the department issued a request for proposals for the Fermilab operation and management support contract.
