Who Is Venice Goodwine?

Goodwine is the Air Force CIO and a member of the Senior Executive Service. She began her post as Air Force CIO in August 2023. In her current role, Goodwine leads a $17 billion portfolio and is responsible for the Air Force’s enterprise IT, cybersecurity and data and artificial intelligence directorates.

The Air Force CIO has more than three decades of IT experience spanning across private industry, government contracting, active and reserve military service and the federal government.

Inside Venice Goodwine’s First Year as DAF CIO

In her first year as Air Force CIO, Goodwine has spearheaded multiple transformative IT initiatives. Here’s a look at a few of Goodwine’s recent accomplishments:

NIPR GPT

In June, the Department of the Air Force launched an experimental generative AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT, called NIPRGPT. The AI tool can converse with Air Force personnel and assist them with certain tasks.

“There are multiple modernization efforts going on right now across the federal government and within the DAF to get tools in the hands of the workforce,” said Goodwine. “This tool is another one of those efforts.”

Goodwine said that having the AI tool available to airmen and guardians will help them to develop necessary skills in an actively growing field.

Cloud Expansion Efforts

Goodwine said she’s looking to expand the use of cloud services across classified networks and out to the tactical edge to better support warfighters.

“I’m expanding the cloud from NIPERNet [unclassified network] to SIPRNet [classified network] and also having all those capabilities as well in that cloud on both sides,” Goodwine said.

She also highlighted the importance of cloud capabilities outside of the continental United States in creating decision advantage for warfighters.

“What’s important for my cloud strategy is making sure that I have cloud at the tactical edge. That’s my reliance on commercial cloud services at the edge because if I’m going to have decision advantage, I have to make sure that the data is available. The data needs to be where the warfighter is and the data needs to be in the cloud,” stated Goodwine.

Hypori Halo Workspace Anywhere

In March, the Air Force launched the Hypori Halo Workspace Anywhere application, which creates a virtual workspace from personal phones, tablets or computers, making it easier and more secure for U.S. Air Force and Space Force members to access email, NIPRNet and other government apps.

“In our dynamic environment, the Department of the Air Force is committed to providing user-friendly enterprise solutions which empower the force to work securely in a wide range of operational contexts,” Goodwine said of the effort.

Goodwine’s First Wash100 Win

In January 2024, Goodwine was named to the prestigious Wash100 list. Goodwine won her first Wash100 Award in recognition of her enterprise IT leadership and innovation.

Each year, Executive Mosaic’s Wash100 Award recognizes the top 100 executives of consequence working in the government and the GovCon industry. These individuals represent the best and brightest within their fields.

“Venice’s deep expertise in enterprise IT, information security and intelligence — and her long career with the Air Force — well position her to oversee the service’s $17 billion portfolio. We’re confident Venice will help shepherd in a new era of technological dominance and power projection for the Air Force, earning her distinction as a Wash100 recipient,” said Jim Garrettson, CEO of Executive Mosaic and founder of the Wash100 Award.
