Project Maven
Largely managed by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Project Maven aims to accelerate AI adoption across the U.S. military. According to Maven Office Director Rachael Martin, a 2024 Wash100 Award winner who will speak at the 5th Annual AI Summit, the office forecasts âa lot more activityâ in its contracting efforts. Some areas that NGA is gearing up to incorporate into the program are text-to-image capabilities, large language models and computer vision.
AI and Next Generation Distributed Command and Control
This upcoming Air Force Research Laboratory contract centers around future uses of AI in command and control activities. Its focus areas include AI research and development as well as evaluating how adversaries use AI and applying these findings to C2 operations. The selected contractor will also look into new methods for the battle management and orchestration of AI at pace and scale. With a potential value of $99 million, this contract is set to drive major strides in the U.S. militaryâs understanding of AI.
Autonomy Standards and Ideals with Military Operational Values
Through this program, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency intends to investigate potential ethical challenges of future autonomy use cases from the standpoint of military operational values. Producing benchmarks to objectively and quantitatively assess possible ethical issues is the main goal of the project. To accomplish this objective, program participants will create prototype generative modeling environments that could help evaluate scenario iterations and variability across a wide spectrum of ethical problems.
