âForeign intelligence entities (FIEs) recognize the importance of the commercial space industry to the US economy and national security, including the growing dependence of critical infrastructure on space-based assets,â stated a bulletin released by the FBI, National Counterintelligence and Security Center and U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations.
âFIEs use cyberattacks, strategic investment (including joint ventures and acquisitions), the targeting of key supply chain nodes, and other techniques to gain access to the US space industry,â it continued.
The warning comes at a time when U.S. intelligence agencies and space agencies are increasingly dependent on commercial space companies. The bulletin offers suggestions for mitigating and protecting against potential attacks and threats from foreign entities.
