Peter Smith, former president and CEO of American Systems, has been elected chairman of the board of directors at the engineering and information technology contractor.
Smith, who retired after more than four decades of company service, succeeds Bill Hoover, who has been chairman of the board since 2015, American Systems said Wednesday.
“I want to thank Bill Hoover for his past leadership and service and look forward to building on his legacy,” Smith said.
The board chair also highlighted his professional journey at American Systems and welcomed the opportunity to continue his association with the company.
The three-time Wash100 awardee held various roles of increasing responsibilities during his 43-year career at American Systems, including executive vice president and chief operating officer.
He also previously served on the executive committee of the Professional Services Council.
John Steckel, who assumed American Systems’ president and CEO roles Wednesday, will also serve on the board as vice chair.
