The National Science Foundation has released a draft solicitation for the development of a next-generation icebreaking research vessel that will support scientific operations in the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic.
A notice posted Thursday on SAM.gov states that NSF will launch an open competition to select an Antarctic Research Vessel integrator to oversee the ARV project through final design review, construction and delivery.
NSF will allocate approximately $61 million for the design and development phase and an estimated $1.2 billion for the construction stage.
The new research vessel will be equipped with modern scientific research tools and enhanced capabilities and is expected to be delivered in 2031.
Polar Class 3 icebreaker ship must be able to independently break ice not less than 4 feet at 3 knots; last up to 90 days without replenishment; and carry provisions for messing, berthing, sanitation and scientific workspaces for crew and science and technical personnel.
Interested parties have until Oct. 31 to respond to the draft request for proposals.
