Forest Service Awards 44 Spots on $1.5B Type 2 Helicopter Support Contract Vehicle

The U.S. Forest Service has awarded 44 companies positions on a potential 10-year, $1.5 billion contract for helicopter support services.

The multiple-award, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract will require vendors to provide Type 2 helicopters weighing between 7,000 pounds and 12,501 pounds in support of USFS’ natural resources and wildland fire management initiatives, according to an award notice published Tuesday.

Type 2 helicopters will be used to back various missions, including fire suppression and monitoring, initial attack, prescribed fire and aerial ignition, short-haul, rappel and associated resource activities.

The agency may also use the aircraft for law enforcement, project and administrative flights under the contract, which was awarded through a full-and-open competition.

The firm-fixed-price IDIQ contract has a one-year base term and nine option years and covers the development of a safety management system program to ensure safe ground and flight operations.

In April, USFS awarded 41 companies spots on a $1 billion contract vehicle to provide helicopters in the Type 3 category.
