Boeing (NYSE: BA) has assigned its Aurora Flight Sciences subsidiary to lead a research and development initiative to update defensive systems and countermeasures of the KC-46A Pegasus aircraft.
The project will focus on the conceptual design and production of composite components at Aurora’s Columbus, Mississippi, factory to support tanker platform modernization efforts, Boeing said Tuesday.
KC-46A features defensive and data integration systems that enable the aircraft to operate in areas closer to the battlespace than existing tankers.
“We continue to evolve the KC-46A and other next-generation refueling and mobility platforms to further enhance mission versatility and survivability,” said Justin Hatcher, advanced technology director for Boeing’s KC-46 program.
Deployed by armed forces worldwide, KC-46A supports cargo and passenger transportation, air-to-air refueling and aeromedical evacuation missions.
In January, Boeing secured a $2.25 billion contract modification to produce 15 additional KC-46A tankers for the U.S. Air Force.
