Vice President Kamala Harris, Tech Industry CEOs Meet to Tackle AI Concerns

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and other administration officials met with the chief executives of Alphabet, Anthropic, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and OpenAI to discuss the importance of responsible innovation in the artificial intelligence field.

The meeting came after the White House unveiled initiatives to ensure AI technology adoption will not harm the rights and safety of people in the country.

“As I shared today with CEOs of companies at the forefront of American AI innovation, the private sector has an ethical, moral, and legal responsibility to ensure the safety and security of their products,” Harris  remarked.

“And every company must comply with existing laws to protect the American people. I look forward to the follow through and follow up in the weeks to come.”

The White House said Thursday that the Office of Management and Budget plans to release draft guidance in the summer of 2023 to establish policies on the development, acquisition and use of AI tools by government agencies and will seek comments from stakeholders to inform the development of the final draft.

Meanwhile, the National Science Foundation intends to make a $140 million investment to create seven national AI research institutes to facilitate collaboration and advance research and development in the areas of climate, energy, agriculture, cybersecurity, energy, education and public health

Anthropic, Google, Hugging Face, Microsoft, Nvidia (Nasdaq: NVDA), OpenAI, Stability AI and other AI developers pledged to support a public assessment of AI models to provide researchers key information and address issues associated with the technology.
