Video Interview: ECS President John Heneghan Talks Federal AI Adoption

Artificial intelligence has exploded in recent months, and in the public sector, officials are harnessing AI technology across a myriad of missions, information technology operations, weapons systems and more.

Executive Mosaic spoke with ECS President John Heneghan, a 2023 Wash100 Award winner, in a new video interview to get his thoughts on which areas are showing the highest demand for AI and the driving forces behind the technology’s adoption.

“We’re changing the game in Ukraine with this type of AI capability, so now we are able to get intelligence to an analyst — to someone who can make a decision and move on that intelligence — and what used to take months, we’re doing in minutes,” Heneghan said in conversation with Executive Mosaic’s Summer Myatt.

Heneghan noted that he’s also seeing demand for AI in emergency preparedness missions, open source intelligence missions, IT service management, predictive maintenance and more.

ECS is the prime contractor on the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency’s main AI effort, Project Maven, and the company was the largest provider of AI/ML solutions to the Department of Defense according to data from fiscal years 2019-2022.

Today, ECS supports AI missions that include developing computer vision models for unmanned vehicles, performing sensitive intelligence and business research and deploying cyber capabilities. But in the future, Heneghan sees a world of expanded AI possibilities.

“If you look further out, I think combining AI and predictive analytics with extended reality, immersive 3D, neural interfaces, cognitive automation systems — this is going to help us tackle mission challenges including better citizen engagement, therapy for veterans and others, and mission training and preparedness activities,” shared Heneghan.
