The Department of Defense has released a plan to implement the goals of the Software Modernization Strategy and develop capabilities to streamline software delivery efforts.
John Sherman, chief information officer of DOD and a 2023 Wash100 awardee, approved the Software Modernization Implementation Plan on March 30, the department said Tuesday.
The document describes the oversight foundation that will help facilitate the continuous planning and management of software modernization and outlines the priority tasks for fiscal years 2023 and 2024.
The implementation tasks in the plan align with the Software Modernization Strategy’s goals and these are accelerating the DOD enterprise cloud environment, establishing a departmentwide software factory ecosystem and transforming processes to enable resilience and speed.
Each goal comes with several tier tasks. For the second goal, tier tasks include enabling trust and sharing across DevSecOps organizations and advancing access to and interoperability of software capabilities and data.
Kathleen Hicks, deputy secretary of defense and a 2023 Wash100 Award recipient, cleared and signed the strategy in February 2022.
Sherman will deliver the opening keynote at the Potomac Officers Club’s 4th Annual CIO Summit on May 16. Register for this in-person event to hear the top GovCon CIOs as they share their insights and efforts to address IT challenges facing their organizations.
