OpenAI to Receive Multibillion-Dollar Investment From Microsoft

Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has agreed to make a multiyear, multibillion dollar investment in OpenAI, creator of artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT, to support the latter’s independent AI research and development efforts and enable both companies to commercialize new AI platforms.

“We formed our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform,” Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO of Microsoft, said in a statement published Monday.

In this next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain with Azure to build and run their applications,” added Nadella.

The investment marks the third phase of Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI, which received investments from the technology corporation in 2019 and 2021.

Microsoft said it will field OpenAI’s models across its enterprise and consumer products and launch new digital experiences based on OpenAI’s technology platform and support OpenAI’s workloads across application programming interface, research and products through its Azure cloud platform.

OpenAI noted that it has teamed up with Microsoft over Azure OpenAI Service, which enables developers to create AI applications by having direct access to OpenAI models powered by Azure’s AI tools and infrastructure and enterprise capabilities.
