Ball Aerospace Receives $78M Space Force Contract to Build 2nd WSF-M Environmental Satellite

Ball Aerospace will build a second satellite for the U.S. Space Force‘s Weather System Follow-on – Microwave program under a five-year, $78.3 million contract modification.

The company is expected to complete the development and fabrication of the additional WSF-M space vehicle by Nov. 15, 2027, the Department of Defense said Wednesday.

USSF’s Space Systems Command is the contracting activity and will obligate $24.4 million in fiscal year 2022 and 2023 research and development funds at the time of award.

Boulder, Colorado-based Ball Aerospace was awarded a $255.4 million in November 2018 to manufacture the first WSF-M spacecraft with a passive microwave imaging radiometer and energetic charged particle sensor instruments.

The system is designed to gather environmental intelligence from space to support weather forecasting efforts over maritime regions.
