Chris Thomas, a technology strategist at Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL), said government agencies seeking to advance digital modernization should adopt 5G to enable real-time operations to occur at the enterprise edge.
“5G environments have an edge very close to the mobile user, maybe in the cell site itself,” Thomas wrote.
“Other edges exist further into the backhaul and create an aggregate set of compute and processing capabilities that bring this next-generation intelligent connectivity and processing into the mobile experience,” he added.
Thomas noted that 5G could provide organizations the ability to process data, field applications and “connect devices over non-standard radio frequency interfaces and position application functions close to the edge.”
He discussed the multiaccess edge computing and how the approach could help agencies bring applications and content close to the edge.
“That approach also provides a mechanism for enhancing or maintaining an organization’s security posture and performance in an everchanging mobile environment — for example, through the implementation of private mobility networks that leverage both licensed and unlicensed spectrum,” Thomas said of MEC.
He stated that agencies looking to accelerate 5G adoption should identify their mission and business objectives to reduce the scope of their 5G requirements and determine which partners could help develop a proof of concept.
