The Department of Defense has awarded Puritan Medical Products a potential $146.8 million contract to help the company produce more foam tip swabs intended for critical COVID-19 diagnostic work.
Puritan will use the funds authorized under the Health Care Enhancement Act to renovate a manufacturing facility and add equipment that will support its monthly production goal of 250 million swabs by February next year, DOD said Monday.
The Defense Assisted Acquisition Cell executed the effort in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of the Air Force’s Acquisition COVID-19 Task Force.
According to DOD, the ongoing pandemic has affected operations across the diagnostic kit manufacturing and specimen collection and testing industries.
