Ellume has been awarded a $231.8 million contract by the departments of Defense and Health and Human Services to manufacture 8.5 million at-home tests for COVID-19.
DOD said Monday the funds will help the company increase its production capacity for coronavirus diagnostic tests by 640,000 each day through December.
The U.S. government will distribute Ellume-made kits as part of the National Strategy for the COVID-19 Response and Pandemic Preparedness mandate.
The Food and Drug Administration gave emergency use authorization to the company for its test kit to be sold over the counter and to provide results to users within 15 minutes via a smartphone application.
Ellume developed its product via the National Institutes of Health-backed Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics initiative.
