Alejandro Mayorkas, second-ranked official at the Department of Homeland Security,  will join Washington-based law firm WilmerHale in November to support the deep civil and criminal litigation and internal investigations area.

WilmerHale said Wednesday Mayorkas will offer more than two decades of experience in public service and the private sector to help the firm work with clients.

Mayorkas has served as DHS’ deputy secretary since December 2013 and helped lead a department with a $60 billion budget and 230, 000 employees in charge of government responsibilities such as responses to terrorist attacks, immigration laws and cybersecurity functions in support of public sector agencies and businesses.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Wednesday DHS Management Undersecretary Russ Deyo will succeed Mayorkas on an acting basis from Oct. 29.

Prior to his role for DHS, Mayorkas led U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services between August 2009 and December 2013 and is a former U.S. attorney for California’s central district with responsibility over investigations and prosecutions of case matters such as financial fraud, public corruption, cybercrime and international money laundering.
